Parent Education and Support

Taking parenting and child birthing classes are a fun and convenient way for expectant parents to learn about the joys and challenges of bringing a new baby into the world. Whether you’re having your first child or you already have practical experience raising a baby, our classes can help you feel confident for the journey ahead.

We offer the following classes:

  • Infant Care and Safety — Monday | 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm | This series is designed to prepare you for the realities of becoming a parent, with special emphasis on coping during the first three months of your baby’s life. Topics include diapering, bathing, soothing, early growth and development, feeding, lifestyle changes, and returning to work. Partners are encouraged to attend free of charge. Snacks will be provided at this class.
  • Breastfeeding — Tuesday | 7:00 pm-10:00 pm | Although breastfeeding is a natural process, it is not instinctive for every patient. This class will provide the information and support needed for a positive nursing experience. The program is taught by the lactation consultants who work in our Birthing Center. Partners are encouraged to attend free of charge. Snacks will be provided at this class.
  • Prepared childbirth — One-day weekend class | 9:00 am-4:30 pm | Class topics include stages and phases of labor and birth, coping strategies, relaxation and breathing techniques, cesarean birth, medication options, a tour of the Birthing Center, newborn characteristics, postpartum adjustments. Please bring two pillows and a mat or blanket for floor exercises, and wear comfortable clothing. Accommodations can be made for couples desiring a childbirth review course. Lunch will be provided at this class.

All classes are held on-site at Mountainside Medical Center and are taught by nurses who are trained, certified and experienced childbirth educators and lactation consultants. Teaching techniques include lecture, group discussion with questions and answers, videos and hands-on activities to accommodate different learning styles.

We also offer tours of our birthing center and an annual Baby Expo, inviting expectant parents and those looking to become pregnant to meet our team and local businesses.

Newborn and Neonatal Care

A full term, uneventful birth is what everyone hopes for. However, babies sometimes need help in their first crucial moments to get off to a strong start. Our neonatologists have years of experience and special training in the care of premature and fragile newborns.

Our newborn care team is available 24/7 to deliver expert neonatology services for both healthy newborns and those born with critical conditions, including:

  • Family education in the care of newborns
  • Hearing screening for newborns and infants
  • Lactation support
  • Specialized care for ill or pre-term newborns
  • Well newborn care

At Mountainside Medical Center, the mission of our Neonatology Department is to provide superior care to infants in the well newborn nursery and specialized care for ill or premature infants in our state-of-the-art special care nursery. We also support families in making a smooth transition from birth to home.

Breastfeeding Support

Breast milk is the optimal nutrition for newborns and research has demonstrated that properly designed and implemented breastfeeding policies in hospitals lead to improved infant health. That’s why we’re committed to promoting, protecting and supporting breastfeeding.

Our program is so successful because it was established by RNs and certified lactation consultants with over 50 years of collective experience working with mothers and their newborns.

At Mountainside Medical Center, breastfeeding assistance is offered to mothers as soon after delivery as possible. Also:

  • A individual plan is devised for each new mother
  • After discharge, mothers are encouraged to call us with any questions

Warm Water Immersion

Our delivery team is  pleased to offer a dedicated maternity tub for laboring women, used for warm water immersion therapy and pain management.

Warm water immersion can be very effective for comfort and pain relief during labor. Water provides support and buoyancy that enables a laboring woman to relax and take advantage of the weightless feeling it provides. It can also diminish stress hormones (catecholamine) and reduce pain by increasing the body’s production of pain relievers (endorphins), as well as ease muscle tension and help women to relax between contractions.

Labor in water offers the following benefits:

  • Diminishes stress hormones (catecholamine)
  • Eases muscle tension and helps women relax between contractions
  • Offers a feeling of weightlessness, relieving tired muscles and stress
  • Promotes a sense of relaxation and conserves energy
  • Provides significant pain relief by increasing the body’s production of endorphins
  • Reduces the need for drugs and interventions, particularly epidurals
  • Speeds up labor

We encourage you to speak to your healthcare provider to determine if this therapeutic tool is a good fit for you and your baby.
