Tinnitus, a condition affecting over 25 million American adults, is both an audiological and neurological issue that can be acute or chronic. It causes the perception of sounds such as ringing or whooshing in the ears, significantly impacting the quality of life for those who experience it. Additionally, hearing troubles are widespread, with approximately 37 million adults in the U.S. reporting difficulties, and about 30 million people aged 12 and older experiencing hearing loss in both ears. Notably, men between the ages of 20 and 69 are nearly twice as likely to experience hearing loss compared to women of the same age group.
Swallowing difficulties, known as dysphagia, affect between 300,000 and 700,000 people in the United States each year. Given that the average person swallows 600 times a day, dysphagia presents a significant barrier to daily life for those suffering from this condition. Despite its impact, only about 50% of individuals with dysphagia symptoms seek clinical help. Meanwhile, head and neck cancers, which account for approximately 4% of all cancers in the U.S., continue to pose a significant health concern. In 2023, more men than women are expected to be diagnosed with head and neck cancer, highlighting the importance of awareness and early detection.
