May is National Stroke Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about stroke and the life‑saving importance of early action. At Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center, we want our community to recognize the warning signs and know when to act, because when it comes to stroke, every second counts.
A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is disrupted, causing brain cells to begin dying within minutes. Quick treatment can significantly reduce the risk of long‑term disability.
Remember BE FAST
One of the simplest ways to recognize a stroke is to remember BE FAST:
- B – Balance: Sudden dizziness or trouble walking
- E – Eyes: Blurry, double, or sudden loss of vision
- F – Face: One side of the face droops when smiling
- A – Arms: Weakness or numbness in one arm
- S – Speech: Slurred or difficult speech
- T – Time: Call 911 immediately if any symptoms appear
Even mild or temporary symptoms should never be ignored.
Stroke Prevention and Awareness
While strokes can happen at any age, many are preventable. Managing blood pressure, staying physically active, eating a healthy diet, and keeping regular medical appointments can help lower your risk.
At Mountainside Medical Center, our teams are prepared to respond quickly to stroke emergencies and provide comprehensive care when it matters most.
Act FAST—Save a Life
This May and year‑round, learn the signs of stroke and share them with those you love. If you suspect a stroke, call 911 immediately. Your awareness could save a life.
