Digestive discomfort that does not go away can be more than just an occasional stomach issue. Two conditions commonly associated with ongoing gastrointestinal symptoms are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, both forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). While they share similarities, understanding their differences is key to accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
Elizabeth John, M.D., gastroenterologist with Mountainside Medical Group, explains that the key difference between Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis is the location and pattern of inflammation in the digestive tract.
“Crohn’s disease can occur anywhere along the digestive system, from the mouth all the way to the rectum, often affecting multiple layers of the intestinal wall in a patchy pattern,” said Dr. John. “Ulcerative colitis is different because it only involves the colon and rectum, spreading continuously along the inner lining.”
Although they affect different areas of the gastrointestinal tract, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis may present with similar symptoms. These may include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, unintended weight loss, and fatigue—symptoms that can significantly impact daily life if left untreated.
While there is currently no cure for either condition, advances in medical treatment allow many patients to effectively manage symptoms and maintain a good quality of life. Early diagnosis plays a critical role in preventing complications and identifying the most appropriate treatment plan.
“Persistent digestive issues should never be overlooked; and vague issues like bloating, early fullness when eating, and change in bowel movements or bowel caliber should never be minimized,” Dr. John stressed. “Early diagnosis and proper treatment can make a significant difference, helping patients improve their symptoms and take charge of their gut health.”
If you’re experiencing persistent digestive issues or have concerns about inflammatory bowel disease, a consultation with a gastroenterologist can provide clarity and guidance.
