What to expect at our ER
Patients can drive or take an ambulance to our ER. Upon arrival at our emergency department, you will be seen by a triage nurse who will assess your condition. Our triage nurse ensures patients with the most serious conditions receive priority care. If admission is necessary, our patients are treated in single-bed rooms for their comfort and privacy.
If your emergency is relatively minor, we can reduce your wait times by submitting you to our Fast Track unit. This fully-staffed, eight-bed unit ensures prompt, efficient care for patients with less serious conditions and injuries. The Fast Track unit also provides convenient bedside registration.
Patients can conveniently check in for their ER visit using the Find Care Now portal, provided they are not facing a life-threatening emergency that requires ambulance transport. In such urgent situations, it is crucial to call 911 immediately. ER patients are typically self-referred, but if the emergency room is at full capacity, they may be directed to another ER or experience longer wait times before being seen.
At our emergency room, our patient advocates are dedicated to greeting you and your loved ones, keeping you informed and making you as comfortable as possible. We are equipped with a state-of-the-art sign language computer and language interpretation phone system to ensure we can effectively serve patients with special communication needs. Additionally, our case managers provide support by addressing questions regarding treatment, insurance, placement, transportation, and other concerns, offering comprehensive assistance to patients and their loved ones.
Our ER is also geriatric-friendly, catering to the special needs of elderly patients. We offer areas with less noise and softer lighting to ensure their comfort, safety and satisfaction.
Lifesaving Cardiac Care
According to the American Heart Association, someone in the United States has a heart attack every 40 seconds, and 450,000 Americans suffer fatal heart attacks every year. At Mountainside Medical Center, we are committed to decreasing those numbers.
Studies have shown that time is of the essence during a heart attack, and fast treatment can reduce damage to the heart. This greatly improves a patient’s chances of a full recovery. When a heart attack patient arrives at our ER, our interventional cardiologists and their designated support team work quickly to restore normal blood flow to the heart. In addition, we have a 24/7 angioplasty team on standby to perform life-saving surgical care when necessary.
Our ER has been awarded disease-specific Chest Pain certification by the Joint Commission, which means you and your loved ones can turn to our ER with confidence, knowing you’ll receive the exceptional care you deserve.

Award-Winning Stroke Treatment
According to the CDC, patients who arrive at the ER within three hours of the first signs of a stroke have a lower risk of disability three months later compared to those who receive delayed care. Additionally, one in three U.S. adults has at least one condition or habit that increases their risk of stroke.
When strokes occur, receiving fast, effective care is vital. At Mountainside Medical Center, we are proud to be designated as a Primary Stroke Center by the New Jersey State Department of Health and Senior Services. That means you can rely on our ER to deliver expert, 24/7 emergency care.
Our emergency department is staffed by experienced, skilled physicians and a specially-trained stroke care team. We offer numerous diagnostic services and treatments, as well as stroke rehabilitation therapy when needed.

- F – Face drooping. Ask the person to smile. Is one side of their face numb or drooping?
- A – Arm weakness. Ask the person to raise both arms to the same level. Does one arm drift downward? Is one arm weak or numb?
