Managing Bladder Health

Millions of Americans are affected by bladder issues. From urinary incontinence to overactive bladder, these types of issues can hinder your quality of life, but with the proper treatment plan in place can be easily managed. Nyarai Mushonga, urogynecologist with Mountainside Medical Center, is giving us insight into her specialty and the methods in which she treats bladder issues.

“I am an OB/GYN by training, but chose to do an additional three years of fellowship in order to become an urogynecologist,” said Mushonga. “I specialize in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery and I work with individuals who have pelvic floor disorders like urinary incontinence, urinary urgency and frequency, prolapse, bowel dysfunction and fecal incontinence.”

Certain lifestyle habits can be modified to help with bladder issues. “If you are experiencing bladder irritation, avoid acidic foods such as oranges, lemons and tomato-based products,” said Mushonga. “Things like coffee, green tea and chocolate can also be irritating to the bladder. Adapting to certain lifestyle modifications can definitely help with bladder health.”

Mushonga also recommends avoiding things that cause constipation like an excessive consumption of dairy or gluten as it can have a huge impact on bladder health.

Mushonga encourages everyone to seek medical attention if bladder issues arise. “If you are having pain or discomfort in your bladder or groin area or you are having accidents with urine, it’s important to know these aren’t problems you have to live with,” said Mushonga. “Due to the fact that these issues can impact your quality of life, it will serve a great purpose to be seen by your gynecologist or urologist so they can find the root of the problem and establish a treatment plan.”

Performing certain exercises can also contribute to your bladder health in terms of your pelvic floor muscles. “Kegel exercises can be very beneficial and can help keep the muscles in the pelvic floor stronger,” said Mushonga. “Exercises that focus on your core, like Pilates, can also be helpful.”
